Verified September 3, 2026: Foundayo (orforglipron) is Eli Lilly's FDA-approved once-daily oral GLP-1 pill, approved April 1, 2026. What is Foundayo (orforglipron)?
Foundayo is the brand name. Orforglipron is the generic drug name. They are the same medicine.
Foundayo is Eli Lilly's once-daily oral GLP-1 receptor agonist. Unlike Ozempic, Wegovy, or Zepbound, it is a non-peptide small molecule. That structure survives stomach acid, so it works as a pill with no injection and no meal-timing fast.
The FDA approved Foundayo on April 1, 2026 for chronic weight management in adults with BMI ≥30, or BMI ≥27 with a weight-related condition. Commercial launch followed April 6, 2026.
In the ATTAIN-1 Phase 3 trial (N=1,401, 72 weeks, NEJM), Foundayo produced 12.4% mean body weight loss versus 2.3% for placebo. It is the first FDA-approved non-peptide oral GLP-1 for weight loss.
The UK authorised orforglipron on August 10, 2026, and for two indications, not one. The MHRA's own announcement is titled "UK first in Europe to authorise orforglipron for weight management and type 2 diabetes." Most coverage that reached US readers four to six days later framed it as Europe's first weight-loss pill approval and dropped the diabetes half. Two corrections worth carrying: this is a UK authorisation and not an EU one, so it says nothing about EMA timing; and it does not change what Foundayo is approved for in the United States, where the FDA indication remains chronic weight management only. A UK licence is not a US one, and asking a US prescriber for Foundayo to treat type 2 diabetes is an off-label request here regardless of what the MHRA authorised.

These percentages come from separate trials with different populations, designs, doses and follow-up periods: oral Wegovy reported 16.6% in OASIS, injectable semaglutide 14.9% in STEP-1 (NEJM), and tirzepatide 20.9% in SURMOUNT-1 (NEJM). They do not establish a class-wide oral-versus-injectable ranking or predict an individual result.
Compounded note: compounded oral semaglutide is not FDA-approved and has no dedicated trial data; bioavailability and quality vary by pharmacy. With two FDA-approved oral pills now available, the case for compounded oral semaglutide is weaker than it was in 2024-2025.
A lower oral semaglutide dose is being tested, and the data is years out. Novo Nordisk started a Phase 3 dose-selection study, OASIS 5 (NCT07770841), on August 12, 2026. It tests two lower once-daily oral semaglutide doses against placebo in 450 participants across 62 sites, quadruple-masked, with percent body-weight change at week 60 as the primary endpoint. Primary completion is estimated for February 22, 2028.
What that means if you are shopping now, which is our read and not the registry's: the only oral semaglutide strength you can buy today is 25 mg. The registry does not mention price, tiers or commercial plans, so treat any claim that this trial creates a cheaper Wegovy tablet as speculation. Data that could support a lower strength is not expected before 2028 at the earliest, and a filing and a launch would each add time after that. If what you want is a lower-dose oral GLP-1 that exists right now, that is Foundayo at 0.8 mg for $149 a month, in the first column of the table above.
How much does Foundayo cost with insurance?
Foundayo's list price (WAC) is about $649/month. Most people pay far less.
With commercial insurance + Lilly's savings card: ~$25/month (the same copay structure as Zepbound). CVS Caremark added Foundayo to its standard commercial formulary effective June 1, 2026.
