Which GLP-1 pills are FDA-approved for weight loss?
Two are: the Wegovy pill and Foundayo. The Ozempic pill and Rybelsus are approved for type 2 diabetes, and compounded products are not FDA-approved.
- Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide, once daily)
- Novo Nordisk's tablet form of the same molecule as injectable Wegovy, FDA-approved in December 2025 for chronic weight management. In the OASIS 4 trial the treatment-policy analysis reported a 13.6% mean weight reduction at week 64, compared with 2.2% on placebo. That group average does not predict your own result. - Foundayo (orforglipron, once daily)
- Eli Lilly's non-peptide GLP-1 receptor agonist, FDA-approved April 1, 2026, and the only approved GLP-1 pill with no fasting rule around the dose. In the ATTAIN-1 trial the highest trial dose (36 mg) produced an 11.2% mean weight reduction at week 72, compared with 2.1% on placebo, with no head-to-head comparison against Wegovy tablets. Trial doses are not the commercial tablet strengths, and a group average does not predict your own result. LillyDirect self-pay is $149/mo at 0.8 or 2.5 mg; $199/mo at 5.5 mg; $299/mo at 9 mg (2.5/5.5 mg promotional prices through December 31, 2026); $299/mo at 14.5 mg or 17.2 mg when refilled within 45 days, otherwise $349/mo. The right prescription depends on your medical history, your other medicines and the product's instructions, not just its headline price or another trial's average. Ask your prescriber to explain the intended use, evidence, side effects and practical requirements for the exact tablet. Do GLP-1 pills work for diabetes?
Yes. Rybelsus and the Ozempic pill are approved to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes.
Their label also covers lowering the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes at high risk of them. The Wegovy pill and Foundayo are approved for chronic weight management.
Which GLP-1 pill is best for weight loss?
No single pill suits every patient, and your prescriber makes the clinical choice.
The Wegovy and Foundayo studies linked above were separate trials, with different populations, durations and analyses, so their headline averages do not tell you which is better for you. This page helps with the purchasing question: which program offers the prescribed product and what the bill includes.
What are the disadvantages of oral semaglutide?
You take it every morning on an empty stomach and wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink or take other pills.
The Ozempic and Rybelsus tablets label lists nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, decreased appetite, vomiting and constipation as the most common side effects. Foundayo has no fasting rule around the dose.
Is there an Ozempic pill?
Yes. Novo Nordisk sells Ozempic tablets for adults with type 2 diabetes, from $149 a month self-pay at the 1.5 mg starting dose.

Do the pills work as well as the injections?
A shared ingredient or a similar trial average does not prove equal results.
