Does Blue Cross Blue Shield cover Wegovy? How to find your plan's answer
For weight loss: Varies by planBy Iacob Pastina. We read every source on .
Blue Cross Blue Shield has no single answer on Wegovy, because each local Blue company writes its own drug coverage. To find yours, you identify your Blue company, then check its drug list and ask whether your employer elected weight-loss coverage.
Of the three Blue companies we read, one ended weight-loss GLP-1 coverage in 2026, one keeps it optional for employers, and one publishes its own prior approval rules.
- Varies by planeach Blue company and employer decides
- Not checkedfor every Blue company other than the three we read
- Prior authorizationwhere covered, under your Blue company's own policy

This page explains what Blue Cross Blue Shield publishes. It cannot see your plan, so your member services team gives the final answer.
Which Wegovy forms do Blue companies list?
Coverage in 2026 often differs by form, so check yours before you fill a prescription.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas added Wegovy HD under the same approach as other strengths, for groups that elect coverage.

Who decides whether your Blue Cross Blue Shield plan covers Wegovy?
Three parties shape the answer, and if you have coverage through work, your employer makes the final call.
1. Your local Blue company
Blue Cross Blue Shield is an association of separate companies, and each one writes its own drug coverage.

Each Blue company works with its own pharmacy benefit manager. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas names Prime Therapeutics.

That is why two people with the same insurance card can get opposite answers: one employer bought weight-loss coverage and the other did not.
How do you find out if your Blue Cross Blue Shield plan covers Wegovy?
Check the drug list, then call. It takes about four steps.
- Find your Blue company. On bcbs.com, enter the first three letters of the ID number on your member card, or your ZIP code. (Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, Local Blue Cross and Blue Shield Companies and Licensees (undated web page))
- Log in to that company's member website and search its drug list for the drug and form your prescriber chose.
- Call the member number on your card and ask which pharmacy benefit manager runs your drug benefit.
- Ask your HR or benefits team whether your employer elected weight-loss GLP-1 coverage.
When you call, ask:
- Does my plan cover weight-loss drugs at all, or does it exclude them?
- Is Wegovy on my plan's drug list, and which form: the injection pen, Wegovy HD or the tablet?
- Which pharmacy benefit manager runs my drug benefit, and which Wegovy policy does it apply?
- Where does my prescriber send the request, and how long does a decision take?
- If you deny it, will the letter say whether it is a plan exclusion or a criteria denial, and what is my appeal deadline?
Write down the name of the person you spoke with, the date and any reference number. You need them if you appeal.

What are your three ways to pay for Wegovy?
Your route depends on whether your plan covers it, whether you have Medicare, or whether you pay cash.
1. Your plan covers it
If your plan approves Wegovy, Novo Nordisk's savings card can lower what you pay at the pharmacy, by at most $100 per month off. You cannot use it with government insurance: the copay offer is for commercial insurance; people on government insurance can use the self-pay prices only by paying outside their plan.
We read the Novo Nordisk savings terms on September 4, 2026. Your copay itself depends on your plan.
2. You have Medicare
If you have Medicare Part D, the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge charges $50 per monthly supply if you qualify. It covers the Wegovy injection and the Wegovy pill. See how the Bridge works or check your eligibility.
We checked CMS's Bridge guidance on September 26, 2026. Medicare's own checker is at medicare.gov.
3. Your plan says no, so you pay cash
- Novo Nordisk self-payfrom $199/moNovoCare self-pay: pen $199/mo for the first two 0.25 mg or 0.5 mg fills through December 31, 2026, then $349/mo at standard strengths or $399/mo for Wegovy HD; oral pill from $149/mo, dose-dependent
We checked the Novo Nordisk self-pay page on September 20, 2026. You still need a prescription.

Compounded semaglutide costs less, and it is not FDA-approved. The FDA does not review compounded drugs for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are sold, so talk it through with a licensed clinician. Read the FDA's explanation, then compare compounded semaglutide prices.
If Blue Cross Blue Shield says no, which denials can you appeal?
Three kinds of no reach you, and only some of them are worth an appeal.
1. Your plan excludes weight-loss drugs
Usually not appealable on medical grounds
Your employer or plan left weight-loss drugs out, so meeting the medical criteria does not change the answer. Ask HR whether coverage changes at your next renewal, and ask your prescriber whether another approved use for Wegovy applies to you.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts ended GLP-1 coverage for weight loss at renewals from January 1, 2026, and says you cannot appeal that exclusion.
This is a benefit exclusion that can't be appealed.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, We've changed our GLP-1 coverage (change effective at renewals from January 1, 2026)2. You do not meet the criteria yet, or paperwork is missing
Appealable
Your plan covers the drug but the request did not show the BMI, program history or other criteria. Ask for the written reason, then have your prescriber resubmit or appeal with chart notes. A denial that rests on medical judgment can go to an independent external review.
HealthCare.gov lists denials that involve medical judgment among those you can take to external review.
Any denial that involves medical judgment
HealthCare.gov, External review (undated web page)3. Your plan prefers a different drug or form
Ask for an exception, or switch
Your plan covers weight-loss drugs but not this version of Wegovy, or wants you to try something else first. Your prescriber can switch you to the listed form or ask for a formulary exception with a medical reason.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas excludes the Zepbound KwikPen and keeps the Zepbound auto-injector for groups that elect GLP-1 coverage.
