What are the four kinds of oral semaglutide?
Only the Wegovy pill is approved for weight loss. The Ozempic pill and Rybelsus treat type 2 diabetes, and compounded products are not FDA-approved.
- Wegovy pill (weight management)
- Novo Nordisk's tablet, FDA-approved in December 2025. In the OASIS 4 trial participants on the 25 mg dose lost 13.6% of their body weight on average at week 64, against 2.2% on placebo (treatment-policy analysis). - Ozempic pill (type 2 diabetes)

- Rybelsus (type 2 diabetes)
- Novo Nordisk's earlier semaglutide tablet, in 3, 7 and 14 mg, approved to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not approved for weight management, and we list it only where a program dispenses it for its approved use.
- Compounded oral semaglutide
- Tablets, dissolving tablets, lozenges and sublingual drops made by compounding pharmacies under a prescription. They are not FDA-approved finished products. Is there an FDA-approved semaglutide pill?
Yes, three: the Wegovy pill for chronic weight management, and the Ozempic pill and Rybelsus for type 2 diabetes.
All three are Novo Nordisk products. Every other "semaglutide tablet" sold online is compounded.
How much does oral semaglutide cost?
The Wegovy pill costs $149 to $299 a month through NovoCare, by dose, before any program fee.
The lowest complete compounded oral price we track is $99/mo at Strut Health (Oral Compounded Semaglutide (buccal lozenge)) (lowest plan price, may need a longer plan). Through a telehealth program, the membership is billed on top of the medicine.
When is the best time to take a semaglutide pill?
Take it once a day in the morning on an empty stomach, with up to 4 ounces of water.
The Ozempic and Rybelsus tablets label says to swallow the tablet whole and wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink anything else or take other oral medicines. Follow the instructions for the exact product your prescriber chooses.
What are the indications for Rybelsus?
Rybelsus is approved to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise.
Its label also covers lowering the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes who are at high risk of them. It is not approved for weight management.
Is Rybelsus safer than the Ozempic pill?
The FDA label covers both tablets in one document, with the same warnings, and it does not rank either as safer.
The label says the two are not substitutable milligram for milligram, so you switch only on your prescriber's instructions. Both carry the boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors.
Do compounded semaglutide tablets work like the injection?
Do not assume they do.
Evidence for an approved semaglutide pill or injection does not establish the results of a different compounded tablet. Ask your prescriber for evidence about the exact formulation offered; FDA does not review compounded drugs for safety, effectiveness or quality before marketing.
